Description
Join dance artist and choreographer Jamaal O’Driscoll, founder of O’Driscoll Collective, for an interactive workshop exploring choreography, improvisation, creative process and developing your practice as an artist.
Drawing from his experience within Hip Hop and Breakin’ culture, improvisation, film, site-specific performance and building place-based work across the UK, Jamaal will share insight into the different influences, experiences and approaches that shape his creative practice.
How do you turn an idea, feeling, environment or question into movement? How can improvisation help generate ideas and unlock new possibilities? How can movement itself influence and shape your wider creative practice? How can the places and communities around us influence the work we make? And how do you develop choreography collaboratively while finding your own artistic voice?
The session will explore Jamaal’s creative process through practical movement tasks, improvisation, creative exercises and open discussion. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment, make creative choices and explore how different starting points can lead to movement, choreography and performance, as well as how movement can open up new ideas and influence the way they approach their wider practice.
The workshop will explore:
● Developing ideas and translating them into movement
● Drawing inspiration from Hip Hop and Breakin’ culture, film, people and place
● Using improvisation as a tool for creativity, exploration and choreography
● Exploring how movement can generate ideas and influence your wider creative practice
● Approaches to choreography and creative decision-making
● Exploring how environment and personal experience can influence movement
● Developing site-specific and place-based approaches to making work
● Developing your own choreographic voice
