PART OF INSIDE OUT FESTIVAL 2017

—–

Mixing break and contemporary dance, Ink is about the struggle between the desires of state and citizen, embodied in the movement and aesthetic of Chinese calligraphy. Drawing inspiration from the imagery of cinematographer Zhang Yimou (‘Hero’, ‘House of Flying Daggers’) and the social commentary of contemporary artist and activist Ai Weiwei, we follow a writer who walks a fine line between art and dissidence.

When government approval is the difference between freedom, imprisonment, exile or worse, a writer must be very careful with their words. Bodies will fly and ink will run in this stunning dance premiere.

A scratch performance of Ink was first developed at Breakin’ Convention‘s Open Art Surgery.
