Fools Gold is a social-magical-realist comedy about economics, family and how thinking differently can change the world.

The story of two sisters trying to make ends meet, whilst Kat works at a PayDay Loan Company, her dyspraxic sister Phoebe is trying to discover the ancient science of alchemy and turn lead into gold. One day, she succeeds – and their lives are changed forever.

Directed by Curve Resident Creative Samson Hawkins, come and watch this brand new play as it goes from page to stage in this exclusive rehearsed reading for #CurveNWF23.

About the Writer
Matthew Gabrielli
is an award-winning, neurodivergent writer for stage, screen and funding applications. He describes his work as telling tales and having adventures, and he’s interested in speculative fiction, weird tales and folklore. His writing plays with and dismantles these genres to create big populace dramas driven by ideas.

His debut play Zombiegate premiered at Theatre 503 in November 2022. Described by WhatsOnStage as a ‘compelling new play: smart, gripping, cautionary and bang-up-to-date’, it was nominated for an Offie for Most Promising Playwright, and was a winner of Theatre Royal Haymarket’s Pitch Your Play.

In 2021, he created the immersive theatre experience The Lapworth Experiment inside the Lapworth Museum of Geology. He is also the winner of the Lancaster Playwriting Prize 2023 and was a Graeae Beyond Artist.
