  • Free entertainment for all outside Curve on Orton Square
  • Curve launches open call-out for local artists to join line-up of performers

Leicester’s Curve theatre has officially announced plans to celebrate its local communities and artists this summer with a free weekend of live entertainment and activities for all ages, as Curve on the Square returns.

As the theatre celebrates its 15th birthday in 2023, Curve will once again build a stage outside its building on Orton Square, which will host performances from local artists and community groups from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 August.

Curve on the Square performances and activities will run 6pm to 9pm on Friday 11 August, 11am to 9pm on Saturday 12 August and 11am to 5pm on Sunday 13 August. Each event will be free with no need to book, and Curve will operate an outdoor bar serving hot and cold drinks and snacks.

Curve is now looking for talented local singers, dancers, musicians, poets, performers and groups to take to the stage, with 30 and 60-minute paid slots available. Applications to express interest in taking part are now open, further details can be found here www.curveonline.co.uk/artists/performance-platforms/

Curve on the Square 2021 saw performances from dynamic Leicester dance organisation Nupur Arts. The Curve Associate company is already set to join this year’s line-up and speaking about the event, Artistic Director and founder Smita Vadnerkar said:

“When we took part in Curve on the Square in 2021, it was the first real, in-person project we had shared with audiences after lockdowns. It was a brilliant chance to perform in an outdoor setting which allowed artists and organisations to come together and share their work with communities in a relaxed and family friendly environment.

“We’re very excited to once again be part of this year’s line-up, which will give us all a fantastic opportunity to come together and celebrate the incredible artists and organisations we have here in Leicester. We’d encourage any local creatives thinking of taking part to apply.”

Speaking about the event, Curve’s Chief Executive Chris Stafford and Artistic Director Nikolai Foster said:

“Summer 2021 saw our inaugural Curve on the Square and it was a joy to see local artists, community groups and audiences meeting on Orton Square for good times, great entertainment, food and drinks. The performances were excellent – the weather not so much! But nothing can dampen our spirits and Curve on the Square is back for Summer 2023, bringing us all together and celebrating the rich culture and diversity of our great city. Join us for free live performances by our superb local artists and community groups. Let’s hope the sun shines!”
