Kali Theatre is looking for the next generation of female South Asian writing talent

Come and discover the playwright in you

Are you an aspiring South Asian female writer? Have you ever thought about writing a play?

Kali Theatre has launched its new DISCOVERY Programme to search for talented new South Asian women playwrights across 3 UK cities.

What is it?
DISCOVERY is a free writing programme for aspiring female playwrights in the East Midlands, West Midlands and London. We are partnering with Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Leicester Curve and London’s Pleasance Theatre to search for 12 talented new South Asian playwrights.

Kali Theatre inspires, supports and presents ground breaking new plays by female South Asian writers.  In the past 20 years we have discovered, nurtured and presented work by over 50 writers. Through DISCOVERY we now want to find and nurture the next generation of talented female writers – who are hugely underrepresented – to bring rich and diverse voices to UK theatre.

Discovery will run from September 2018- March 2019.

This programme is open to UK based women writers of South Asian descent who are eligible to live and work in the UK.

You do not need to have any previous play writing experience.   But if you have previous experience, then we are looking for writers who have not had a play presented in a full production.

What I will receive as part of the DISCOVERY Programme?

Selected writers will receive:
•             3 playwriting workshops led by leading female practitioners
•             Dramaturgical support to develop you 10-page submission into a 20-minute play

  • Rehearsal with actors and director
  • Two public performances of your script as a staged reading in a gala showcase for industry, friends and family
  • A bursary towards travel expenses and childcare
  • Access to theatre events
