A Raisin in the Sun

Synopsis

Share:

Join us this Black History Month for a rehearsed reading of Lorraine Hansberry’s landmark drama A Raisin in the Sun. This special performance will also be followed by BlackChat, an after-show discussion led by Curve Associate Company Serendipity with reflections on the role playwrights across the world have had in sharing stories of Black lived experiences.

It’s the late 1950s and the African-American Younger family live in poverty in a small apartment in Chicago’s south side. When Lena, the family’s matriarch, receives her late husband’s life insurance pay-out, she hopes to use it to buy a bigger house in a white neighbourhood, whilst her son Walter dreams of using the money to build his own business, and daughter Beneatha hopes to become a doctor. Can the family’s dreams of a ‘better’ life be achieved in the face of racial prejudice and inequalities?

From the Harlem Renaissance in 1920s and 1930s USA through to through the Theatre of Black Women in 1980s UK, playwrights internationally have played an important role in sharing stories of Black lived experiences.  This special edition of BlackChat holds space to celebrate the work of selected playwrights; come and join the conversation.
