THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE DIVA - A CHOREOPOEM

21 - 22 JUN 2012
STUDIO PERFORMANCE

Dare to Diva Productions presents the World Premiere of
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Diva - A Choreopoem written and performed by Carol Leeming, part of Leicester’s Cultural Olympiad Festival

Produced by Dare to Diva in association with Apples and Snakes, Phoenix Square Digital Media Centre and Peepul Centre.

A choreopoem combines spoken word, cutting edge contemporary music and physical theatre, with stunning digital visuals. Written and performed by multi-artist Carol Leeming. This is the story of a gifted but deeply flawed Black diva reflects on her life, imbued with a glorious dream, a prize seemingly everyone would want. This is an epic story of strength and vulnerability, unmistakably Leicester born and bred, of Windrush pioneers, spanning the 60s – 90s with highlights of family troubles, encounters with Disco Divas and Club Culture plus the underside of the music business and fame. All that glitters may not be gold...

Solitaire - a rare and precious jewel set apart, her life seemed like a long distance race, a battle or game, but would she ever win?

Creative Innovation Supported by Igniting Ambition Legacy Trust, Arts Council England and Lottery

Jennifer Cook Ph.D. Lecturer, English Literature Loughborough University

"Her lyrical dexterity encompasses the humorous, the acutely observed, the moving and the intimate, all of which she delivers in commanding spoken word performances."

Jason Finn, Poet & Head of English Winstanley Community College Leicester

"Subtle word play and attention to the nuances language, singing and spoken word, she conjures the ancient art form of the Griot. Hers is a voice which captures the experience of twenty first century multi cultural England."
